Can’t say enough good things about this property. Hughthir is a wonderful host — completely unobtrusive, but popping up whenever we needed him. The property is so special — beautiful, serene, with hummingbirds and other unexpected treats all over. Felicia (dog) was delightful. The house is lovely and the books kept us pleasantly occupied all weekend. Thank you Hughthir!

First off, Hughthir is a great host and good guy. This is away from everybody and very comfortable. I’m glad I chose this place. I like how social he is and his friendly pets. It and made our stay even better… and the house’s history. I do recommend staying here. I have no complaints and would stay again. Thanks Hugh!

Our family just returned from staying in Hughthir’s cabin. We had a fantastic time! Both the cabin and the land are beautiful! We could have spent our whole time just walking around the lake, climbing trees, and playing board games in the lovely home. However, we spent some of Saturday going to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. The visitor’s center in Empire is only 10 minutes away! Those too are beautiful and fun. This is the perfect location for somebody (or a family like ours) who wants quiet, nature, and time to just be with one another. Hughthir was the perfect host. We look forward to returning in the not too distant future!

What a place to relax and reflect on life. Hughthir it has changed our lives for the better! We were a little concerned driving a mile into the woods, but it is well worth it. Hughthir has made a wonderful compound back there. Very interesting buildings, owner is informative and his home is close but gave us plenty of privacy. Super clean and simple rental, yet has everything you need. Wildlife is also at its best. A short drive to all the interesting sites. Beats the crowded hotel rut!!! We just wish we could have stayed longer. Felecia the furry host was super sweet! We loved her and could have taken her home. Thank you again for allowing us to experience this unique property. We will be back!

This is a beautiful, wooded home which you will never want to leave! Our family had such a great time. If you like to explore the forest and revel in nature, this is a great choice for a vacation home. The owner is a great host, and is helpful but also very respectful of privacy. We can’t wait to visit this green house next year! Thanks – the kids say this was the best vacation ever.

We loved the house, it’s simply but beautifully constructed and very well appointed for a rental cabin. There were plenty of interesting books to read, and the kitchen was very well supplied with everything we needed for cooking. Being ‘off the grid’ was not a problem at all, the house has a simple yet very elegant solar/wind system that was more than for lights and everything else we needed. The owner is an excellent guy who is more than happy to go the extra mile to make his guests feel comfortable and at home. If you’re vacationing in the area, this place is a bargain and just far away enough from all the madness in Traverse City (but not too far to make it inconvenient to get there), and very close to some of the best beaches on Lake Michigan. You won’t be disappointed!

The home is better than the pictures. My wife and I took our three kids for a 3 day weekend and loved every minute. We were inside more than we liked due to rain, but we didn’t feel hemmed in. In fact the fire, book, and nap did us well.
Hughthir is a wonderful host and has a real gem worth seeing and staying at. It was the best up north weekend I have had in many years.

This property is clean, comfortable and quiet. Off the grid does not mean primitive! It is located in a beautiful meadow between the happening town of Traverse City, Michigan, near the music arts camp Interlochen, and the incredible dune coastline of Empire. The proprietor is friendly, nearby, but not imposing. A small, spring fed lake and acres of woods make hiking, canoeing, and nature watching ideal activities. You may not get to town! A beautiful summer retreat, but may also be fun in the winter season!

This was a fantastic cabin in the woods. Very well thought out design. very comfortable home. Hiking right outside your door. Deer right outside your window. Very accommodating owner. We loved it. A great place for our 10th anniversary.
